The story of legendry Heer Ranjha has generally been depicted as a love story between two individuals who fell in love and consequently had to die for the ideal they upheld. The impression of the story created by commercial media that influenced the youth needs to be changed in order to bring out what the story actually represents; a grand narrative of Punjab’s agrarian society spread over five thousand years.

The story, penned by great classical poets Damodar and Waris Shah, portrays an ordeal of socially conscious lovers who in their struggle to build an independent relationship based on love come into conflict with all the institutions of society; social and official. They face and challenge tradition-bound family, gender inequality, judiciary, clergy, land lords, tribal chiefs, and class distinctions. They defy all the taboos evolved by historical hierarchies exposing their inbuilt contradictions and anti-people nature. Thus their story becomes a complex societal tale that needs to be told and re-told to the younger generation to introduce them to the Punjab's complex social and cultural evolution that put on the stage of history the most defiant and forward looking charecters espacially the female, ever created in this part of the world.
